Background of the Study

Healthcare access is a crucial determinant of health outcomes, and transportation and geographic barriers play a significant role in shaping healthcare-seeking behaviors. In regions where healthcare facilities are geographically distant or transportation infrastructure is inadequate, individuals may experience difficulty in seeking timely care (Liu et al., 2024). Federal Medical Centre, Gombe, serves as a primary healthcare provider for individuals in its catchment area, yet patients often face challenges due to transportation and geographic barriers. These factors can lead to delayed care, increased disease burden, and, in some cases, prevent individuals from accessing essential healthcare services altogether.

This study aims to explore the effect of transportation and geographic barriers on healthcare-seeking behaviors at Federal Medical Centre, Gombe. Understanding the extent of these barriers is vital for implementing effective healthcare delivery strategies, ensuring that all individuals, regardless of geographic location, can access the healthcare services they need.

Statement of the Problem

Transportation and geographic barriers continue to hinder healthcare access in many parts of Nigeria, especially in rural and underserved areas. At Federal Medical Centre, Gombe, patients from remote locations often face difficulties in reaching the facility, leading to delays in diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up care. However, little research has been conducted to examine how these barriers specifically affect healthcare-seeking behaviors at the facility. This study seeks to fill this gap by providing an in-depth analysis of the challenges and the ways in which they impact healthcare decisions.

Objectives of the Study

1. To examine the impact of transportation barriers on healthcare-seeking behaviors at Federal Medical Centre, Gombe.

2. To assess how geographic factors influence individuals’ decisions to seek healthcare at the facility.

3. To propose strategies to overcome transportation and geographic barriers to improve healthcare access.

Research Questions

1. How do transportation barriers affect healthcare-seeking behaviors at Federal Medical Centre, Gombe?

2. What role do geographic factors play in influencing healthcare access at the facility?

3. What interventions can be implemented to reduce the impact of transportation and geographic barriers on healthcare-seeking behaviors?

Research Hypotheses

1. Transportation barriers negatively impact healthcare-seeking behaviors at Federal Medical Centre, Gombe.

2. Geographic barriers contribute to delays in seeking healthcare and lower healthcare utilization rates.

3. Interventions addressing transportation and geographic barriers will increase healthcare utilization at the facility.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study will focus on patients seeking healthcare at Federal Medical Centre, Gombe, particularly those from rural or underserved areas. It will assess the effects of transportation and geographic barriers on healthcare-seeking behaviors. Limitations include the potential for self-reporting bias, as participants may underreport or exaggerate the extent of barriers they face. Additionally, the study is confined to one healthcare facility, which may limit the generalizability of findings.

Definitions of Terms

• Transportation Barriers: Obstacles related to the availability, affordability, or accessibility of transportation that prevent individuals from seeking healthcare.

• Geographic Barriers: Physical distance or location of healthcare facilities that hinder individuals from accessing necessary medical care.

• Healthcare-Seeking Behaviors: The actions individuals take in response to health symptoms or conditions, including their decisions to seek professional healthcare services.
